We are a group of physicians who specialize in Musculoskeletal medicine in our private practices, and who believe that the art and science of prolotherapy is teachable and that the skills you attain will enable you to “get to the point” effectively and efficiently. The skills you learn are directly applicable to your practice.

Prolotherapy: Getting to the Point combines online modules with our book, Principles of Prolotherapy, to give you a comprehensive course, dedicated to educating physicians and Musculoskeletal professionals from all over the world about techniques and advancements in the field of prolotherapy.

PROLOTHERAPY

WHAT IS IT?

Prolotherapy is a procedure where a natural irritant is injected into the soft tissue of an injured joint. The irritant kick-starts the body’s healing response.

Prolotherapy is not a surgical treatment. Because of this, it is also known as a regenerative joint injection or non-surgical ligament and tendon reconstruction.

ABOUT US

Thomas Ravin, M.D. of Denver, Colorado

Thomas H. Ravin, M.D. is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is board certified in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. He began specializing in musculoskeletal medicine and prolotherapy in the mid 1980’s. He studied prolotherapy with several osteopathic physicians who had worked with both George Hackett MD and Gus Hemwall MD in the later 1950’s and early1960’s the physicians who defined modern prolotherapy.

Dr. Ravin has been a practicing prolotherapist for nearly 30 years, and has been teaching prolotherapy to medical professionals since the early 1990’s.  Dr. Ravin has trained hundreds of professionals, using the experience he has gained from successfully treating thousands of patients.  Dr. Ravin’s text, Principles of Prolotherapy, written with Dr. Mark S. Cantieri, D.O. and Dr. George J. Pasquarello, D.O., is a best-seller, and is widely considered to be the most comprehensive text covering all aspects of prolotherapy.

prolotherapy education

Dr. Ravin has studied osteopathic manipulation with the innovators of non-forceful techniques that do not inadvertently stretch ligaments such as muscle energy with Fred Mitchell Jr. D.O., functional manipulation with Ed Stiles D.O. and strain counterstrain with Mark Cantieri D.O and George Pasquarello D.O. These manipulative techniques give Dr. Ravin powerful treatment options and enhance his MSK diagnostic skills. He also evaluates the impact of postural abnormalities on the bones, ligaments and tendons and their correction with numerous functional movement modalities such as Pilates and Alexander technique. Dr Ravin also relies on his old profession of ultrasound for both diagnosis and injection guidance.

MSK medicine is as much an art as it is a science. The basic sciences of MSK medicine such as wound healing and tissue repair, referred pain patterns, physical examination techniques for evaluating ligaments are known and well documented. The art of MSK is now to use all of this information to diagnosis and then treat an individual’s pain complaint. The art of MSK medicine improves with age and practice and Dr Ravin has been doing it for 26 years.

Dr Ravin is currently in private practice in Denver, Colorado and is the president of Val d’Isere Health Clinic, PC. He specializes in evaluating chronic pain using many diagnostic methods including the history, joint range and mobility, assessing ligament laxity, the pain diagrams of the patients and ultrasound. Many causes of MSK pain can only be found with hands on evaluation, as they are not visualized with MRI, CT, x-ray and ultrasound. This allows him to refine the causes and the diagnosis of the pain with more precision than many of his colleagues in MSK medicine, PM&R and sports medicine who often rely on these for a diagnosis.

Since 1990, Dr Ravin has organized and taught prolotherapy for the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine, the Canadian Association of Orthopedic Medicine and the American Academy of Musculoskeletal Medicine. Because of his passion for teaching prolotherapy, he pursued and developed the necessary graphic design skills to create many of the original injection illustrations in the book Principles of Prolotherapy.
